PRESS RELEASE 3 June 2008
Eesti Pank opens its money exhibition in Räpina
Today, June 3, at 13.00 Head of the Cash and Security Department of Eesti Pank Rait Roosve opens Eesti Pank's travelling exhibition "The Estonian Money from the Mark to the Euro" at the Räpina Paper Factory. The exhibition provides an overview of the payment means that have circulated in the Republic of Estonia since the creation of the republic. The Estonian mark celebrated the beginning of our independence and from 1928 to 1940 the Estonian kroon circulated in Estonia. The kroon we use now was put forth in 1992 and the introduction of the euro is still ahead. The Räpina Paper Factory has its own connection with the Estonian money: a part of the banknotes of Estonia's first own currency, the mark, was printed on the paper produced in the factory. One of such banknotes is the 100-mark treasury note designed by Nikolai Triik. A puzzle has been prepared from the banknote to mark the exhibition held in Räpina and it can be solved on the spot together with other puzzles of Estonian banknotes. The exhibition also displays photos from the year 1928 depicting the production and handling of the kroon at Eesti Pank before it was released into circulation. The display is the result of cooperation between Eesti Pank and Ivar Leimus. The exhibition was designed by Tiit Jürna. The exhibition on the history of money continues to travel in Estonia during the anniversary year of the Republic of Estonia and the month dedicated to Eesti Pank. Among other places, the exhibition has been displayed in the Läänemaa Museum, Rakvere Reaalgümnaasium and the Kuressaare Castle. In Viljandi, the exhibition is open until 21 June at the Town Library. In June, the exhibition will reach the Aegviidu community centre and the National History Museum of Latvia. In Räpina, the exhibition is open until 21 July.
