Euro coinsThe euro coin series comprises eight different denominations: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent, €1 and €2. All the euro coins are legal tender throughout the euro area. The euro coins have a common side and a national side. The national side indicates the issuing country. They show country-specific designs, surrounded by the 12 stars of the European Union. The Estonian euro coins have been designed by Lembit Lõhmus, a renowned graphic artist and author of many post stamps. The design of the Estonian euro coins is based on Estonia's contour map. €1 and €2 represent the outline of the Estonian landscape. In addition, the €2 coin shows the northernmost point of Estonia, Vaindloo island, the westernmost point, Nootamaa isle, the southernmost point near Naha and the easternmost point Narva. Commemorative and collector coins €2 commemorative coins are special circulation coins with a commemorative design on the national side. Each euro-area country can issue a €2 commemorative coin once a year. The €2 coin is the most suitable owing to its diameter and certain technical properties, which prevent forging. It is possible for euro-area members to issue a joint commemorative coin. So far, two such coins have been issued: "50 years of Europe" "10 years of EMU"Further information on commemorative coins is available on the web site of the European Central Bank. Collector coins are minted from precious metals and their aim is to celebrate high-level persons and events. Collector coins are not intended for circulation and they are legal tender only in the country that has issued them. Their selling price is equal to or above face value. The characteristics of collector coins, such as their design, nominal value, colour, diameter or weight, differ significantly from those of circulation coins. Commemorative and collector coins are intended as mementos and collector's items. |
